Art and Motherhood: The Gift of Letting Go

How Creation and Love Teach Us to Trust the Journey

In both art and motherhood, we learn that love often means having the strength to let go. As a Peruvian artist based in Miami, I've discovered that this truth applies not only to the people we cherish but also to the creations that come from our own hands and hearts.

Motherhood teaches us that our children are their own beings, meant to grow, explore, and find their own paths. We nurture them, love them, and give them the best of ourselves, but at some point, we must step back and trust that they will find their way. Art, in its own way, mirrors this experience.

Last year, while aboard a magnificent Peruvian navy sailboat, I felt the gentle sway of the water beneath me. It reminded me that life, like the ocean, is in constant motion. A ship is not meant to stay docked; it is built to sail into the unknown, carried by the winds of change. This is the essence of both motherhood and art—the courage to set something free, trusting that it will find its course.

When I create, each piece carries a part of my soul. I pour my emotions, experiences, and passion into it. But once it is finished and shared with the world, it no longer belongs solely to me. Sometimes, a piece finds a home in someone else's heart. Other times, it takes an unexpected journey, one that I can't control.

One of my most personal artworks, "Ella es Sabia", became an unexpected teacher of this lesson. It participated in a few exhibitions , carrying a part of my essence with it. Yet, its final destination was not what I had imagined. It faded into the intangible, with little chance of ever returning. But in that loss, I found something greater—a deeper understanding of transformation, resilience, and renewal. I realized that the true gift of creation—whether in art or in motherhood—is the ability to let go, to make space for something new, something greater. Holding on too tightly can sometimes prevent us from receiving the blessings meant for us.

As artists, we take what we experience—the beautiful, the painful, the unexpected—and we turn it into something meaningful. Even the hardest moments can be recreated into something stronger, something new. Perhaps "Ella es Sabia" will be reborn, transformed by all that she has taught me.

Letting go is not about losing; it's about trusting. Trusting that what we have given will continue to live beyond us, touching others in ways we may never fully see or understand. And in that space, in that openness, new inspiration, new love, and new opportunities find their way in.

So whether it's a painting, a dream, or even a child spreading their wings—let them go with love. Because in that release, we create more room for growth, joy, and the unexpected gifts life has in store.

As I continue this journey as both an artist and a mother, I carry this lesson in my heart. Creation is an act of love, and love is an act of trust. What we give to the world—whether through art or through the people we nurture—will always find its way, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, meaning, and transformation.
